About this tramp

This new tramping camp in 2019 is for those keen on giving real tramping a try in the New Zealand backcountry.

We will be casually tramping on average 9km each day to DOC huts along a reasonably good condition track down the Lower Hollyford river valley. This brief-taking track takes in views of Mt Tutoko (Fiordland's highest mountain), Hidden Falls (a stunning hidden waterfall) and Lake Albaster (a back-country gem of a lake only accessible by foot).

As beginner tramping you will need to have reasonable level of fitness (so start training now) and will need to carry all your own food and gear with you as you tramp.

Tramping Camp Features

Views of Mt Tutoko

Mt Tutoko is Fiordland's highest mountain and raises straight out of the Hollyford valley above Hidden Falls hut.

Fun and Games

With no no power or cellphone coverage, we have plenty of time to play cool games like "The Most Awesome Game in the World" and make our own fun in the wilderness.

Good Food

Tramping is all about walking, good company and eating food. Lots of snacks to build up your energy for tramping

Essentials to know before you enrol

These are essentials to know before you enrol in this tramping camp:

  • You will need good fitness and be able to walk at least 9km each day (no really big hills on this tramp however). You can start building fitness now by going for increasingly long walks each week.

2016 Leaders Tramp

The winter leaders tramp is now an annual classic and we are inviting you to come and join the fun!!!

This is a great oppourtunity to meet or catch up with other leaders in a relaxed low key environment.

If you are interested in attending you NEED TO CONTACT Tim Wiel at the CYC office to talk about the tramp.

In the past we have had a quiet weekend jaunt up the Routeburn valley to the Routeburn Falls Hut for the night.

Anyone really keen for some weekend of fellowship with some ‘neat people’ are also welcome to attend this tramp.

It is a winter tramp so expect the following from the weekend:
– easy going track
– minus 0 degrees temperatures and maybe snow
– warm fellowship and good food

Some limited transport may be available from Waihola to the tramp and home again.

Your gear will need to include:
– Good boots with ankle support
– Very warm clothing (including two sets of thermals)(last time we did this tramp there was a -5 degree night in the hut)
– Very warm sleeping bag (again it is very cold)
– Wet weather gear (last time it snowed)
– Your own food (although dehydrated food is available for purchase from CYC at our cost price)

2015 Tramping Camp

NZ is a big playground – get into it on our annual tramping camp. This year we will be tramping in the Snowden Forest area near Mavora lakes – so  tramping camp will be epic.

Some of the scenes for Lord of Rings was filmed in this area (see this link – http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/lord-of-the-rings-locations/#nen-hithoel) so hopefully we don’t run into any Orcs. 🙂

This years tramping camp will include so tenting as well as a hut so be sure to pack some warm clothes.

2014 Tramping Camp

The 2014 Tramping camp will be tramping amazing Mt. Somers tracks!

Photos from this camp can be found here.

The intended plan at this stage for tramping camp is:

  • Saturday 13th December – Drive to Mt Somers Woolshed Creek carpark and tramp into Woolshed Creek Hut where if there is room we will stay in the hut if not will set up tents nearby and camp the night.
  • Sunday 14th December – Day trip up to the summit of Mt Somers where the views are of the entire Canterbury plains from Christchurch through to Timaru
  • Monday 15th December – Tramp to Pinnacles Hut and either stay the night their or set up camp nearby.
  • Tuesday 16th December – Tramp out and drive home

Its a pretty easy tramp (except the summit climb) compared to recent tramping camps with short distances that can be covered in under half a day so we can amble along and take extended breaks at areas of interest of which there is a few along the track.

Whilst the tramp is not an overly technical or alpine tramp as we are staying at sea level the entire way it is important that you a fit and healthy for this camp.

It is essential you are able of walking 20km at the minimum in a day with a pack on.
